OBC Organizational Structure

The Consortium will be led by the founders and Chairs of OCCBIO, Lonnie Welch of Ohio University and Terry Lewis of the OSC.  As Consortium Coordinators, Welch and Lewis will provide oversight and facilitation for all Consortium activities.  The Coordinators will be assisted by a Steering Committee composed of Consortium members who will be responsible for each component of the program.  The research and infrastructure components will be coordinated by Michael Raymer, of Wright State University, and Ashok Krishnamurthy of OSC.  Bill Tacon, Director of Workforce Development with BioOhio, Victor Chan, Senior Research Biologist with the Air Force Research Laboratory, and Kari Green-Church, Director of Proteomics Shared Resources at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will coordinate the industry internships and research experiences.   Zhong-Hui Duan, of the University of Akron, Steve Gordon, of the RRSCS, and Helen Piontkivska, of Kent State University, will coordinate the curriculum component and facilitate movement of selected courses to distance learning offerings.  K-12 outreach and recruitment will be coordinated by Eric Stahlberg, who holds an appointment with Wittenberg University, and Kelly Hall, of Clark State Community College.  The COF Scholarship Program will be coordinated by Sarah Wyatt, Ohio University.  The Consortium Steering Committee will hold quarterly phone conferences to supplement e-mail and phone interactions to discuss Consortium business. Each coordinator will have a sub committee composed of faculty and staff involved with the Consortium.

      • Software pipeline facilitation
      • Shared instrumentation (for data acquisition and analysis)
      • Future hardware and network resource planning
      • Secure funding for basic research (biological and medical research that requires bioinformatics; infrastructure; bioinformatics algorithms and tools)
    • K-12 Outreach/Recruiting Special Interest Group
      • Define and maintain promotional collateral (electronic, printed)
      • Organize and support activities and resources for K-12 engagements statewide
      • Identify career paths and educational needs in bioinformatics for students and parents
    • Scholarship Special Interest Group
      • Identify and apply for funding for student scholarships/stipends
      • Manage student recruitment and awarding of scholarships
      • Facilitate all aspects of the scholarship program at local colleges/universities
      •  Participate in reporting activities for the scholarship program
    • Membership/Nominating Committee
      • Strategic planning for recruitment/retention of members
      • Assessment and enhancement of member benefits
      • Provide names of appropriate people (at least 2) to be chair, vice chair, sec//treas./ and chair subcommittees to the executive committee
      • Conduct elections to elect said officers so that names can be announced at the annual meeting, and officers can take office at the end of the annual meeting.
