Tutorial 3: Introduction to Bioinformatics

Title: Introduction to Bioinformatics

Presenters:
Zhong-Hui Duan, Department of Computer Science and Department of Biology, Integrated Bioscience Program, University of Akron

Francisco Moore, Department of Computer Science and Department of Biology, Integrated Bioscience Program, University of Akron

Abstract: This tutorial introduces the fundamental concepts of bioinformatics, bioinformatics databases and basic computational approaches used in the field. It begins with an overview molecular biology and a tour of the databases. The tutorial then introduces search systems such as BLAST, Map Viewer, and Cn3D structure viewer. Sequence comparison methods to be covered include Smith-Waterman pairwise alignment method, BLAST and ClustalW multiple sequence alignment method. The tutorial also covers basic methods for phylogenetic tree constructions and basic data mining methods for microarray data analysis.

Biographical Sketches of Presenters:
Zhong-Hui Duan received her MS degree in Computer Science and PhD degree in Applied Math both from Florida State University. She is currently an associate professor of computer science and a member of the integrated bioscience program at the University of Akron. Dr. Duan’s research focuses include data mining techniques for microarray data analysis, ontology-based protein function prediction, and fast multipole algorithms for molecular simulations.

Dr. Francisco Moore is an associate professor of biology and integrated bioscience at the University of Akron. His undergraduate training was in zoology and biochemistry and he now holds a PhD in Zoology and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Michigan State University. His areas of study include theoretical and empirical population genetics, evolution of complex quantitative traits, gene interactions and host-pathogen co-evolution. His most recent research directions involve application of evolutionary theory to economic and cognitive models. He works primarily in vertebrate, bacterial and computational systems.
