Abstract: We will discuss some of the fundamental problems and algorithms of bioinformatics, with an emphasis on genomics. Sequence alignment and search, shotgun sequence assembly, prokaryotic and eukaryotic gene organization, phylogenetic tree induction, protein structure prediction, and rational drug design basics will be presented. Algorithms will be demonstrated using a pencil-and-paper approach appropriate for both computer scientists and non-programmers.
